First a wreck, then a riddle
The discovery context is a shipwreck near Antikythera, between the Peloponnese and Crete. The salvages of 1900.1901 and the study of 1976 revealed a variety of cargo. The wreck belongs to the first century BC; the objects on board did not all have to be made at the same time.
This distinction prevents a common confusion: the date on which a ship sank is not automatically the date of construction of each object in the cargo. An instrument may have been in use. A subsequent calibration or a chosen starting point of a cycle is also slightly different from the moment when a maker processed the metal.
The mechanism was not taken out of the sea as a neat, complete machine. The tradition consists of damaged material that has to be investigated in conjunction. The history of the find and those of the interpretation run side by side: mountains, preserving, recognizing, measuring and asking questions again.

What does a manual instrument charge?
The Kotsanas Museum dates to the mechanism globally around 150...100 BC. It is a hand-operated astronomical calculation tool: a change to the input is translated into hands and indications via mechanical relations. It makes regular connections between calendar and sky movements manageable.
The often used name computer requires explanation. This is analog calculation with moving parts. A gear ratio captures a ratio: turning on one axis leads to another movement elsewhere. The device is not a modern digital computer with a general program that you easily switch.
The creator and the exact construction site have not been established. A name of a famous scholar can provide an attractive story, but does not replace evidence. The technical performance does not diminish when we leave that open question: the instrument combines craftsmanship, astronomical knowledge and the choice of how to make complicated cycles readable.

Meton: Connecting solar years and lunar months
A lunar month and a solar year do not fit into a simple whole ratio. The Metonic cycle compares about 235 synodical months to 19 solar years. Synodically, here, the repetition of the same lunar phase, for example, from new moon to new moon. It is a useful approach, no explanation that both periods are completely identical.
The upper backrest plate used a five rotation spiral for the calendar. A spiral allows a long series of months to fit in a relatively small space. The order is readable without all information having to be on one narrow circle edge.
In the model below, we only choose an expired number of months and calculate that in proportion to the 19-year cycle. The circle is our educational view; it does not copy the historical spiral or the precise cogwheel train. Try the beginning, about half and the end: a repeating pattern makes time comparable, but does not yet tell an event date.

Saros: repetition is not yet visible eclipse
The Saros includes 223 synodical months, about 6585.3 days: about 18 years, 11 days and 8 hours. This combination brings the relevant geometry of sun, earth and moon about back. Not every new moon produces a solar eclipse; the lunar orbit and position relative to the nodes are also important.
The extra eight hours is significant. The Earth continues at that time, so that a repetition does not have to be visible from the same place. Knowing a cycle is something different than predicting an eclipse for your location. Also the duration in calendar years and days depends on the calendar context.
The Saros mode of the educational model only shows the progress over 223 months. No invented eclipses or modern dates appear. Use the difference with Meton as a research question: why would an instrument need more than one cycle? Because a calendar problem and an eclipse do not require the same ratio.

From fragment to argumented model
In 2021, UCL described about one third of the original instrument as preserved, divided into 82 fragments, with 30 overflowing bronze gears. Imaging, including X-ray tomography, helped investigate hidden structures and inscriptions. The outside of a corroded block is not the entire source.
The proposed reconstruction of the front is a model that tries to combine preserved material, text and mechanical capabilities. It is not a find of all missing parts. The distinction between observed gear, text derived function and proposed supplement remains essential.
The interesting question is not only whether a model is running, but why exactly that model fits the limitations. Can the parts physically sit in the available space? Do the proportions fit? Does the explanation fit with the inscriptions? Such checks make reconstruction into research instead of just an impressive animation.

Learn to read a mechanical cosmos
A mechanical model brings together two worlds: the irregular observed sky and the precise movement of material. The rear used a four-way Saros spiral with eclipse markings. Inscriptions are not decoration; they help a user understand what a stand means.
Watch the translation stroke with every modern animation. A transparent cabinet makes parts visible that a historical user may not have seen. Color coding, acceleration and loose floating gears are useful learning tools, but change the experience. Ask which layer the image shows: operation, mechanics or interpretation.
Connect this guide with philosophy by asking what explains a model. It describes regularity and enables certain calculations, but does not automatically explain every cause behind the movements of the sky. It is precisely this limited force that makes the instrument interesting: it converts part of the world into an act.
