Causes, form, possibility, virtue, practical wisdom, friendship and politics. A philosophy in which not every question requires the same kind of certainty.

Aristotle doesn't just use cause as the event that triggers something. You can ask what form or organization it has, which creates it and what it serves. Those types of explanation do not have to compete with each other.
An editorial example is a house. Stones and wood answer the material question, the arrangement and the form of construction another question, the builders the creation and habitation the purpose. Just mentioning the material does not explain why this building was created. Only the purpose does not explain how it remains.
Aristotle also investigates living processes. Therefore, first make clear what phenomenon is explained and what answer is asked. The four questions are not a magical formula, but a way to recognize incomplete explanations.

What question remains unanswered when you only say what something is made of?
In Aristotle's thinking, form is not just the visible outside, but the understanding touches what organizes something like this thing. Matter without that order is not yet the same concrete object. A living body is not just a random amount of material.
Possibility and reality help to describe a change. A seed does not simply have every conceivable future; its possibilities are related to what it is and to the circumstances. Thus, change is not only a leap between totally separate states.
Editorial exercise: distinction in a skill possession, exercise and execution. One may have learned something without doing it at the moment. That difference is a simple entry into the concepts, not a complete summary of their metaphysical application. Ask each time what possibility is meant and under what conditions it can become reality.

Why is something can't be the same as anything can be anything at any moment?
The Ethica Nicomachea explores the highest human good. Eudaimonia is often translated with happiness, but means more than a pleasant mood here. It concerns the good functioning of a human life, in activities that are part of excellence and judged over a lifetime.
This makes character and action more important than one moment of pleasure. Also circumstances and other people matter. Aristotle's view is not simply that a strong character makes any loss or lack of resources irrelevant.
Interpretation: Good life requires a time scale. A decision can be pleasant in the short term and weaken the quality of action in the long term. Conversely, a difficult act is not right because it is difficult. The question remains what activity really makes a human life good and what reasons that assessment bears.

What do you miss when you measure a good life only by today's feeling?
The middle of virtue ethics is not an arithmetic mean between two opinions. Courage stands between certain forms of deficiency and excess, but what is appropriate depends on danger, purpose and situation. Sometimes proper action requires a pronounced response.
Character is created by repeated actions. However, habit formation does not mean that you only have to follow a pattern. The distinction between the appearance of proper behaviour and the actions of a formed character remains important. An action may happen to be good while the person does not understand the reasons.
According to Aristotle, not every kind of action has a good mediocre version. Thus, the teaching is not always a task to lie half as much or to choose between just and unjust. Interpretation: first ask what is wrong or right about the action itself and then how intensity, timing and motive change the action.

When is moderation wise and when will it become an excuse not to choose clearly?
Phronēsis is the ability to consider what needs to be done in concrete circumstances. It is not simply technical smartness: someone can achieve a bad goal very skillfully. Practical wisdom remains connected with the quality of the goals and character.
The problem of akrasia makes it clear that knowing and acting do not automatically coincide. One can recognise a general rule and act differently in a concrete situation under the influence of desire. The analysis therefore asks what form of knowledge is currently working.
Editorial example: understanding that rest is important is something other than leaving the most attractive distraction at the decisive moment. However, the guide does not make Aristotle a modern therapy or productivity method. The example only helps to make the difference between general belief, perception of the situation and real choice visible.

What knowledge counts if it doesn't play a role in your concrete action?
Aristotle distinguishes friendships that are based primarily on the benefit, pleasure or goodness of the persons concerned, which does not mean that goodness and pleasure are always bad, the difference as to the relationship and what happens when circumstances change.
The political community is being investigated as an environment in which people live and act together. His discussion contains views about slavery and rank that need to be severely criticised. Defending what a philosopher defends is not consent to his exclusions.
Interpretation: Ask in a friendship if the other has a function for you only, or is also meaningful for its own sake. Then ask in politics who is recognised as a participant in the good life. A theory can be insightful about cooperation while placing some people wrongly outside its ideal community.

How can a theory of good life be enlightening and exclusion-oriented at the same time?
