Samaria National Park
Σαμαριά
The national park behind the famous gorge: nature, habitation, the long passage and the preparation of a complete hiking day.
More than a famous gorge
Samaria National Park is located in the Lefka Ori of West Crete. The long gorge is the most famous access to this landscape, but the area also includes slopes, forests, altitudes and the transition to the south coast. Since 1962 Samaria has been protected as a national park. Nature and its long human presence make it more than a walking performance.
The classic passage connects Xyloskalo near Omalos with Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea. A mountain day ends here at sea, but the difference in altitude does not tell the whole story: uneven subsoil and length make the walk physically burdensome. Start with the question of whether you can organise the full day including a return trip, not at the photo of the narrowest passage.
[4]What UNESCO terms mean
Samaria is part of the UNESCO network of biosphere reserves. Such recognition is about the relationship between biodiversity, landscape and human use. The description includes Mediterranean forests with cypresses, pines and low shrub vegetation. The lime landscape creates different conditions at a short distance from each other.
[2]In addition, the gap is on the Greek provisional list for World Heritage, which is an candidacy phase, not a registration on the final World Heritage list, so the word "UNESCO" on a card can refer to several programmes, which deserve a place in addition to the admiration for the landscape.
[3]Stone, water and shadow
In a limestone mountain range, water is both flowing and underground. The deep incision makes several rock walls, soils and sheltered areas visible. The relief ensures a variety of light, moisture and temperature. The UNESCO description describes sources, mountain streams, karst caves and steep walls as components of that variety.
During a permitted walk, look at a few recurring patterns: where does moisture last longer, where is the forest and where is the bottom opener? Keep quiet on a spacious, permitted rest spot. A picture of a wall becomes more interesting if you notice what grows underneath. The landscape is better read at its own pace than as one long descent.
[2]Agrimi and living among the rocks
The Cretan wild goat, the agrimi, is the recognizable animal of Samaria and the Lefka Ori. The nature archive of the park emphasizes its importance for the protection of the area. Such a symbol stands for a much larger whole: habitats, food, tranquility and connections between places.
Seeing an animal is not a guaranteed part of the ticket. Keep your distance and do not lure it with food for a photo. The value of a protected landscape does not depend on whether one species shows itself during your visit. Also spores, bird sounds and the variety in vegetation can produce a good perception.

A inhabited landscape
The gorge was not always an area that you crossed as a visitor only. The cultural guide of the archaeological service describes traces of antique activity, the later village of Samaria and churches. The fourteenth century church of Hosia Mary is associated with the name of the village and the gorge.
At the former village it helps to ask another question: what did daily life look like in a place that you now mainly experience as a walking route? Moving, building, organizing food and water were given its own scale. Respect the remains as a history of a community; they are more than a rest point between two parts of the path.
[4]Why you read both 13 and 16 kilometers
The UNESCO candidacy mentions about 13 kilometers between the northern and southern park entrance. Other official descriptions speak about about about 16 kilometers from Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli. These numbers do not contradict each other: the distance to the exit of the park is not the same as the total trip to the village and the further connection.
For your day planning, count the complete route, rest moments and the movements afterwards. Do not count on the end of all effort once you have seen the narrow passage. As an editorial planning margin this is a whole day, with several hours walking. The exact duration varies too much per person and circumstances to promise one arrival time.
[3][4]From Xyloskalo to the return journey
Think of the classic trip as three separate arrangements: transport to the starting point, walking and transport from the south coast. Check the bus to Omalos, the boat from Agia Roumeli and the bus from your arrival port before you book. Choose a connection with sufficient margin; a continuous journey is only arranged when all the parts connect to your date.
The right boat can depend on the place where you want to travel. Use the current information from ANENDYK and KTELHere we do not take over fixed departure times or transport prices: they can vary per day and season.
A short visit from an entrance is a different choice than the complete passage. First, please inform us which routes are open that day and what time you should return. The short route is not automatically allowed, meaning that the whole gorge is transitory.
Prepare for a real walking day
Shoes with grip, plenty of water, sun protection, a cap, food and a loaded phone are the practical basis. When choosing, take into account knees, ankles and condition: long descent can be heavy, even when you normally walk easily on flat terrain. Walk not only to get a booked boat faster than you find responsible.
Follow the current ground rules and instructions of employees. Stay on the allowed route and respect temporary closures. Rain, drainage, rockfall, heat and fire hazard can affect the opening. Photographs from a dry summer day do not say much about the condition on your walking day. If you have any doubts about your options, a shorter alternative or delay is a normal planning choice.
Opening: Check the day itself
