Start with sentence structure, gender and articles. Then move on to cases and the present tense. Leave aspect and compound tenses until you feel comfortable with the basics.
The model forms have been checked against the official Greek school grammar. The explanations, translations and exercises are editorial teaching material. This is not a certified course; regional usage and exceptions sometimes need further explanation. Audio uses synthetic speech.
Reading guide: γράφουμε — the stem uses normal type and the ending is bold and blue. This applies to the included declension and conjugation models, including example sentences. Separate articles and invariable words stay intact; irregular forms without a clear division are left unsplit. A changed stem or an initial augment is not an ending.
New: chapters 62–92. Try searching for conjugation, non-active forms, hypothetical situations or the genitive. On narrow screens, the tables scroll horizontally.

1. How a Greek sentence works
Start with a verb: with it you say what someone does or what something is. A useful first pattern is person + verb + supplement. Θέλωνερό tells θέλω all that I want something. εγώ So, you don't usually have to.
Greek has a freer word order than Dutch. Outputs and name traps help to identify who acts and what the object is. The order can emphasize information. First learn a quiet basic sentence and change the order only if you know what you want to emphasize.
A question does not have a Dutch auxiliary verb such as "do" . You can use the same verb form with question tone. The Greek question mark is ;. In written text that is not a common Dutch semicolon.
Use this step-by-step plan: choose the meaning, choose the verb and the person, add a noun with appropriate form, then add space or time. Learn fixed sentences and understand their parts.
Please note
Leave the subject alone, but let the verb form fit the intended person.
Each noun has a grammatical gender: male, female or neuter. That is a characteristic of the word. The Dutch de/it does not predict the Greek sex. Therefore, learn a new word with its article: ο καφές, η σαλάτα, το νερό.
Singular and plural changes often change the output. The article changes with you. For example, you can see in a menu το ψάρι but τα ψάρια. Plurals are not all related to the same rule.
Outputs give clues: many words -ας or -ης are male, a lot on -α or -η Female, much on--ο, -ι or -μα These are patterns, not guarantees. η οδός shows for example that a word on -ος may also be female.
If you know the gender, you can also choose the correct adjective and certain numbers. Always write article + word + plural with your own word notes.
The definite article often refers to something recognizable or something you're already talking about. It has forms for gender, number and name trap. Use the table as a cheat card and learn the forms together with concrete words.
In the nominative you say ο καφές, η σαλάτα, το νερόWhen coffee becomes the direct object, the article changes: Θέλω τον καφέ. By the neuter το You can see no difference between nominating and accusative.
For a name is often also a definite article: η Άννα. That use is normal in Greek, even if you just say "Anna" in Dutch.
The shape τη(ν) shows a spelling variation. ν In female forms depends inter alia on the following sound. τον and έναν retain their default spelling νLearn examples and consult a dictionary in case of doubt.

The indefinite article has the same basic forms as the number one: ένας, μία/μια, ένα. The context determines whether you count one copy or simply mean a copy. In the plural there is no direct plurality of the indefinite article.
When ordering, the order is often a direct object. έναν καφέ, not automatic ένας καφές. Μία μπίρα and ένα νερό In these examples, female and neuter.
You may leave out the verb in a short order: Έναν καφέ, παρακαλώ. The sentence is short, but the name fall remains explainable from .
Learn one pattern per sex and then change the noun. Check that your new word uses the same namefall form. Not every male word looks like καφές.
Please note
Use the model for this word family; with a new word there can be exceptions or other forms.
A name trap is a form that shows what role a word group has. In Dutch we usually use word order and words like "van." Sometimes we also change a word: "he sees me" versus "I see him." In Greek, the article changes and often also the noun and adjective.
Start with the meaning of the sentence. Do you say something about someone, do you see someone, is something someone's or do you call someone? Below the same friend gets a different role each time. The help questions are a first hold; verbs and prepositions can also ask for a certain name trap.
Nominative
Who or what's the subject?
Ο φίλοςπίνεινερό.
The friend drinks water.
Ο φίλος Tells who drinks. Use the nominative even if the subject is or undergoes something: not every subject is an active doer .
Accusative
Who or what do I see, want or meet?
Βλέπω τον φίλο.
I see the boyfriend.
With βλέπω, I see , the person you see is the direct object. Therefore, ο φίλος here τον φίλο.
Genitive
Whose or what is it?
Το σπίτι του φίλου.
The friend's house.
Του φίλου This is a case in point, and the word "of the Greek example' does not have a specific preposition.
Vocative
Who am I speaking to directly?
Φίλε, έλα εδώ!
Buddy, come here!
You call your friend, you don't tell him anything, but you direct him. Here you don't use an article: φίλε.
This is how you choose the shape, step by step
Find the verb. For example βλέπει: he/she sees.
Find the role of the word group. Who sees? Subject → Nominative. Who is seen? Direct object → Accusative. From whom? Possession relationship → Genitive. Who are you calling? Speaking → Vocatively.
Choose the appropriate article and the word form. Also look at gender and singular/plural. After a preposition you check which name trap belongs to it.

Ο φίλοςβλέπει τη Μαρία.
The boyfriend sees Maria. Ο φίλος is the subject: the friend sees. Τη Μαρία is the direct object: he sees Mary.
Η Μαρίαβλέπει τον φίλο.
Maria sees the friend. Now Maria is the subject and τον φίλο The friend is the same person; his role has changed.
Αυτό είναι το σπίτι του φίλου.
This is the boyfriend's house. Του φίλου tells us who the house belongs to.
Φίλε, έλα εδώ!
Buddy, come here! You're speaking directly to him: Vocative, without article.
Το παιδίβλέπει το σπίτι.
The child sees the house. Το παιδί is subject; το σπίτι Both are neuter: their nominative and accusative look the same.
Πηγαίνω με τον φίλο μου.
I'm going with my friend. Με The friend is not a direct object: a preposition can also determine the name trap.
The cards show frequently used functions, not a complete list. The nomination is also in a state or property; the genius expresses more than possession; the accusative occurs even after prepositions. The fourth name fall is called vocative and is used when addressing.
Learn to bend like families.ος for example, a male family can follow, while a word on -ι The table gives concrete nominative patterns; it is not an automatic rule for every Greek word.
A male word may have a different shape in the accusative: ο φίλος → τον φίλο. An neuter word like το ψάρι holds the same shape in the abattoir. The genius can have its own output and accent again.
With plural, more than one letter sometimes changes. Το γράμμα gets τα γράμματα. You learn to form the stem better from a small row than by replacing only the last letter.
The stress is part of the form. In some inflections it moves. Learn irregular or new words with a dictionary, especially in genius and plural.

An adjective adapts to the noun: gender, number and name trap. καλός, καλή, καλό means "good" or "good." ο καλόςκαφές, η καλήσαλάτα and το καλόνερό.
If the whole word group is an object, appropriate parts change: Θέλω έναν καλόκαφέ. It is not enough to change only the article and keep all other words unnoticed in the nomination.
An adjective can also be added after είμαι staan: Η σαλάτα είναι καλήThe word καλή then describes the subject η σαλάτα. είμαι Therefore, there is no automatic accumulative effect.
Not every adjective follows -ος, -η, -ο. There are among others families on -ος, -α, -ο and -ύς, -ιά, -ύUse the table as the first model and learn new families separately.

The strong forms of the subject are: εγώ, εσύ, αυτός/αυτή/αυτό, εμείς, εσείς and αυτοί/αυτές/αυτάOften you don't have to mention them: θέλω says all ♪ I want ♪ ♪ Add ♪ εγώ For example, if you want to emphasize .
Εσείς and the corresponding verb form are plural, but are also used to address one person politely. In the taverna is Μπορείτε... a useful polite form.
The third-person pronoun matches the sex of the person or case in question. You don't have to translate it literally as "he" or "she" when it refers to a thing.
Subject and object do not have the same forms. Με in Με βλέπει means "mij'; it is not a substitute for εγώ The short objects come back in a separate pattern.
Please note
Use the model for this word family; with a new word there can be exceptions or other forms.
A simple pattern of possession is article + noun + short form of possession: το ποτήρι μουMy glass, so the possession form is usually after the noun. Μου, σου, του, της, μας, σας and τους are important building blocks.
The same short shapes may have a different role in other sentences. Μου returns Μου δίνεινερό I'll take care of it. Με in Με βλέπει is a direct object: he/she sees me. Determine the function from the whole sentence.
Ordinary short objects stand in front of a person form. θα and να they are between the particle and the verb: θα το πάρω, να το δω. In an affirmative commanding wise, they find out exactly: δώσε μου.
Short forms can create an extra accent on the previous word. Το όνομά μου therefore has a visible extra accent. Treat this as a real spelling phenomenon and don't let accents go.

In many verbs with stress on the stem you see the pattern of θέλω: -ω, -εις, -ει, -ουμε, -ετε, -ουν. The ending fits the person. That often makes it possible to leave out the personal pronoun.
The present tense can describe what is happening now, but also what you usually do. Πίνωκαφέ can be "I drink coffee" at this time or as a custom. Time words and the situation clarify that.
A bend table is a model for the person outputs. You cannot automatically create the past tense or a completed aspect. For this, the verb can have a different strain.
In daily language you sometimes hear variants, like an extra -ε Here we use a compact standard table, starting with that one consistent set.

Not all verbs on -ω have the same pattern. Several families are important in the case of verbs with end-clamps. Μιλάω/μιλώ follows a series other than μπορώ.
Learn the first two forms together: μιλάω → μιλάς and μπορώ → μπορείς. Instantly remember that the ending of "you" is not the same for both families. The stress remains an important part of the spelling.
Variants as μιλάω and μιλώ The table uses one usable sequence and inserts the alternative first person, which doesn't mean that other standard variants are wrong.

Είμαι, being a pedigree, is very frequent and has its own inflection. It connects the subject with a condition, identity or property. Έχω, having a "s', is also important for possession and many fixed expressions.
After είμαι remains a noun supplement to the subject. Ο καφές είναι καλός has therefore καλός in the nominative. Compare this with a real object phrase like Θέλω έναν καλόκαφέ.
Greek and Dutch do not always use the same verb in fixed expressions. Έχωκράτηση for .I have a reservation . Learn such combinations as a whole and not only translate the Dutch verb.
Έχω also works as an auxiliary verb for composite times: έχωφάει, I've eaten. έχω no possession. The following form remains unchanged in that pattern while έχω goes with the person.

The ordinary denial of a communication is δεν: Δεν θέλωκαφέ. With a sentence with θα comes δεν before θα: Δεν θα πάρωκαφέ. να-structures and negative commands you usually use μη(ν).
Questionwords help build a sentence in a targeted way: πού true, πότε when, πώς how, γιατί Why and τι What. A questionword can take the place of unknown information; then you use an appropriate form of person.
Pay attention ναι and όχι: ναι means yes, not no. A Dutch sound band is a bad reminder here. Practice these two words separately and then in short dialogues.
Spelling and intonation work together. Πού has an accent in a direct question; the relative που that occurs further on is another use. Don't just learn an accentless drawing row.

Combine many common prepositions with the battery: με, από, για, χωρίς and σεTranslate them into context. Σε may express, among other things, a place or direction, while για often means "toloin'.
Σε draws together with a certain article. Σε + τον is στον, σε + την is στην and σε + το is στο. In the plural you use among others στους, στις and στα. These are word forms that you can recognize directly on maps and in travel phrases.
A contraction does not change the function: Στο τραπέζι still contains a preposition and a article. Look at the word that follows to determine gender, number and name trap.

Modern Greek used in many situations in which Dutch has an infinitive a construction with να And a personality. ♪ I want to eat ♪ ♪ Become ♪ Θέλω να φάω. The person of the second verb is therefore visible.
The subject of both verbs may differ. Θέλω να φας means "I want you to eat " . The second verb tells who performs the act. You don't have to mimic it with an unbent Dutch infinitive.
After να you can use a durable or repetitive form or a form that presents the action as a whole. Να τρώω and να φάω That aspect is not a simple contradiction between "long" and "short."
Also πρέπει, it is necessary / must be , and μπορώCommon να-construction. Learn a few reliable combinations before using new verbs in this pattern.
Please note
Use the model for this word family; with a new word there can be exceptions or other forms.
A sense of the future often uses θα plus a verb form. Θα γράφω Emphasises writing as a continuous or repeated activity. Θα γράψω presents the writing as a whole.
This distinction is called aspect. A perfect form does not have to mean a short act: a whole journey or long project can be presented as a whole. An imperfect form can depict the development or repetition.
Verbs can have two different strains: γράφ- and γράψ-, τρώ- and φά- You cannot reliably predict this by adding the same letter to each verb. Therefore, learn important verbs in linked forms.
Θα doesn't change with the person; the verb does. Θα πάρω I'll take and θα πάρουμε is we will take. A timeword like αύριο helps to make the moment clear.
Greek has an important distinction between an event as a whole and a continuous or repeated situation in the past. έγραψα is writing as a completed event. The imperfectum έγραφα shows writing as background, development or habit.
In a story, both can stand side by side: a continuous background and a new event that takes place in it. The Dutch translation can be used for both writings, so the Greek difference is not always immediately visible.
In past forms, the strain, output and stress can change. Some forms have an augmentation, often έ- in a stressed syllable. Do not always add mechanically έ- the place of the stress and the family of forms are important.
Many daily verbs have irregular past strains. Learn for example πίνω → ήπια and τρώω → έφαγα A dictionary or bending table is more practical than a universal trick.
Please note
A Dutch translation with "I've done" is not proof that Greek should use a completed time.
A common completed pattern is έχω plus an unchanging verb form: έχωγράψειThe auxiliary verb changes with the person: έχουμεγράψει, we have written.
With the past auxiliary verb arises είχαγράψει, I had written. θα έχωγράψει tell you that something will be completed at a future reference point. Always look at the time of the auxiliary verb and the context.
The completed time and the aorist overlap in use, but are not always freely interchangeable. A clearly closed time like χθες Fits often with the aorist. Avoid the assumption that every Dutch . . . have done . . . automatically with έχω must be translated.
The unchanging form is not an ordinary infinitive that you can use anywhere. In these composite times he belongs to the auxiliary verb. Learn a whole combination, like έχωφάει, as a starting point.
Please note
Use the model for this word family; with a new word there can be exceptions or other forms.
The commanding sage speaks to someone directly to: γράψε, write. For multiple persons or politely you use an appropriate plural form such as γράψτε. Not every verb forms the commanding sage in the same way.
A affirmative command can put short objects behind the verb: δώσε μου, give me. In an ordinary announcement, such short forms usually appear before the verb. Word placement therefore depends on the type of construction.
For a negative command you use μη(ν) with an appropriate form of person: Μην περιμένετε. You do not simply deny every affirmative commanding sage with δεν.
In the taverna a polite request often sounds more pleasant than a bald order. Μπορείτε να...; and Θα ήθελα... are useful fixed frameworks. The polite effect also depends on tone, relationship and situation; παρακαλώ helps but doesn't automatically make every order fit.
Please note
Use the model for this word family; with a new word there can be exceptions or other forms.
Greek verbs have active and inactive form families.μαι does not automatically mean that a sentence has a passive meaning. Έρχομαι means I'm coming: I'm the one who comes.
Other inactive forms can indicate an action on yourself, such as πλένομαιPassive meaning is another possibility: something is washed or prepared. So form and meaning must be kept apart.
A well-known present-day form family is -ομαι, -εσαι, -εται, -όμαστε, -εστε, -ονται, but there are other families and variants. Learn the pattern with a reliable model and don't just -μαι Behind every active strain.
Also inactive verbs can have their own past and aspect strains. For daily language it is useful first words like έρχομαι and κάθομαι to learn full verbs. For production of new forms a bending table is needed.
Please note
The shape -μαι does not tell by itself whether the meaning is passive.
With small connection words you can expand short sentences. Και adds something, αλλά it is contrary to the principle of subsidiarity and γιατί may incite a reason. In a question can γιατί exactly why do you mean "wrong." The function is shown in the sentence.
Όταν introduces a moment or situation: όταν έχωχρόνο, when I have time. Αν builds a condition. The form of the verbs together with the context determines whether the condition is open, general or not.
An accessible comparison used πιο + adjective + από: πιο ακριβό από αυτό, more expensive than this. The adjective still fits the case you're talking about. There are also separate comparative forms like καλύτερος.
For a useful longer sentence you don't have to add everything at once. Start with two simple sentences and connect them to one word. Then check references, person, name trap and time. A correct short sentence is the best building block for a longer one.
Please note
Use the model for this word family; with a new word there can be exceptions or other forms.
In aspect, you look at the way you present the act. An imperfect form shows development, background or repetition. A perfect form sets down an action as a whole. Both can be about a long action.
Compare Γράφω ένα μήνυμα with Θα γράψω ένα μήνυμα. The first sentence shows the activity in the present; the second calls a future writing act as a whole. For future comparison you use θα γράφω versus θα γράψω, so that time and aspect are not confused.
Even after να Choose your aspect. Θέλω να πίνω λιγότερο καφέ is about a habit you want to change. Θέλω να πιω έναν καφέ calls one drink. The stem πίν- opposite πι- helps identify the distinction.
Choose a form with a concrete context: is something a habit, a running background or an action that you call a whole? A timeword helps, but is not an automatic switch. Also repeated events can be summarized in a larger rounded whole.
Please note
A word like κάθε μέρα helps read the context, but does not replace a complete analysis of the sentence.
Read, listen and compare
Θέλω να πιω έναν καφέ.
I want to have a coffee.
Θέλω να πίνω λιγότερο καφέ.
I want to drink less coffee as a habit.
Θα γράψω ένα μήνυμα.
I'll write a message.
Θα γράφω κάθε μέρα.
I'll write every day.
A word like κάθε μέρα helps read the context, but does not replace a complete analysis of the sentence.
Daily verbs are often the exact words with irregular strains. Learn a small set in connection: πίνω, ήπια, θα πιω; τρώω, έφαγα, θα φάω; πηγαίνω, πήγα, θα πάω. Each form is linked to a meaning and situation.
The present tense, aorist and perfect future are not three variants of the same output. Sometimes the stem changes strongly. Removing a final letter and -σα adding does not work as a general method.
A useful method of learning is to create three short sentences: now, yesterday and tomorrow. So remember the function together with the form. Then learn other people from a controlled table, like θα πιούμε before we drink.
Forms as πάω and πηγαίνω This workshop uses a named model variant and shows the chosen shapes; it does not attempt to automatically add unknown verbs.

Forming in the past may appear an augmentment, for example the stressed έ- Of έγραψα. In the normal model γράφω See you έγραφα and έγραψα, but γράφαμε and γράψαμε in the first person plural.
This shows why you don't just put the same piece for every person. An augmentation and the stress are related to the word form. The standard paradigm verses are your best control.
Irregular forms may also have a different beginning: ήπια belongs to πίνω. Some families have their own history or other forms. For everyday learning recognition of the whole model is more useful than all historical explanations at the same time.
Use the accent as part of what you remember. Γράψαμε and γράψατε have a different person's ending, but both emphasize this γρά- For an unknown verb, check the entire past sequence.
Short object forms are in an ordinary communication before the verb: το βλέπω, I see it. θα and να they come between the particle and the verb: θα το δω, να το δω.
In the case of two short forms, the indirect form usually precedes the direct form: μου το δίνει, he/she gives it to me. Μου appoint the recipient; το So the meaning determines what form you need.
An affirmative order has a different placement pattern: δώσε μού το. The short forms follow the verb. A negative command uses another form of person with μη(ν), such as μη μου το δώσεις.
Do not translate a short form without context. Του may mean "of him" with a noun, but also "of him" with a verb. First recognize possession or object and then look at the position.
In the case of an order with two short objects, the first short form may be given an extra accent: δώσε μού τοCompare that with δώσε μου νερό, true το is not a second short object form. The accent is part of the pattern, not every single one μου.
Please note
Other word orders with strong forms may be possible; here you explicitly practice the short pattern.
Read, listen and compare
Το βλέπω.
I see it.
Θα το δω.
I'll see.
Μου το δίνει.
He/she gives it to me.
Δώσε μού το.
Give it to me.
Other word orders with strong forms may be possible; here you explicitly practice the short pattern.
The relative που connects a noun with additional information: το φαγητό που θέλωThis shape does not change with the gender or number of the previous word.
The question πού with accent asks for a place. Compare Πού είναι η αγορά; with Η αγορά που βλέπω.... The function and accent differ. Therefore, the word image only without accent is not a good learning strategy.
In more formal or more precise constructions you come ο οποίος, η οποία, το οποίο versus. Those shapes will change. Learn the common που and deepen the bent sequence when you start reading longer texts.
A relative sentence can not always be translated with the same short trick. For possession, a preposition or an unclear reference may be more necessary. You always wonder what word the additional information refers to.
An open condition can be created with αν and an appropriate verb form: Αν έχωχρόνο, θα πάω στην αγοράYou say what will happen when the condition is fulfilled. The main sentence and subsense must together form a logical time perspective.
For example, in a hypothetical situation, you use Αν είχαχρόνο, θα πήγαινα στην αγορά: If I had time, I would go to the market. This is a different performance than a normal open-ended condition.
An unfulfilled condition in the past may use composite forms: Αν είχαφύγει νωρίτερα, θα είχαφτάσει στην ώρα μου. The Dutch translation with had and would have been a useful start, but not an automatic turnover rule.
Learn these three situations first with one model sentence. A condition is not good by alone αν verb forms, meaning and time designations must also be compatible.
Please note
The models show commonly used patterns; other conditional constructions require additional context.
Read, listen and compare
Αν έχωχρόνο, θα πάω στην αγορά.
If I have time, I'll go to the market.
Αν είχαχρόνο, θα πήγαινα στην αγορά.
If I had time, I'd go to the market.
Αν θέλετε, μπορούμε να φύγουμε.
If you want, we can leave.
Αν είχαφύγει νωρίτερα, θα είχαφτάσει στην ώρα μου.
If I had left early, I would have arrived in time.
The models show commonly used patterns; other conditional constructions require additional context.
An adjective describes a noun and changes it: καλόςκαφές. For example, an adverb can describe an action: Μιλάεικαλά, he/she speaks well. Καλά in such use is not dependent on the sex of the speaker.
Πιο can build a comparison with both an adjective and an adverb. Πιο ακριβό describes an neuter case as more expensive; πιο αργά describes an action as slower. First read what the word describes.
There are also special forms of comparison, such as: καλύτερος with a male noun and καλύτερα in an act. Dutch good/better is not always translated with one Greek word per meaning.
When comparing with another case, you often use από. The form of the comparative adjective remains appropriate to the own case described. Therefore, do not check only πιο, but also the ending of the word after.
Κάποιος means someone; κάτι means something. Κανείς/κανένας and τίποτα in a negative sense, the meaning can have no one and nothing. δεν: Δεν βλέπω κανένανI don't see anyone.
This Greek pattern is not a Dutch double denial that you should simply delete. The negative elements work together to make one negative meaning. Read the construction as a whole.
In a question or other non-confirming context, the same words may have a different interpretation. Θέλετε τίποτα; can ask in an informal situation if anyone wants anything. τίποτα so not translate everywhere mechanically as nothing.
These pronouns can also have nouns. Compare κανένας as a subject with κανέναν Start with a few controlled sentences before you start the full sequence.
The genius is useful for property and other relationships, but the form is not only a new article. Το νερό is του νερού; η σαλάτα is της σαλάτας; το ποτήρι is του ποτηριούThe ending and sometimes the stress change.
If necessary, learn nouns together in a new noun.ου The sex alone doesn't predict the entire inflection either.
In the case of a short form of possession, an extra accent may appear on the previous word: το όνομά μου. That is a different phenomenon than the shift of stress into a genius, both of which are part of the written form.
In spoken language accents help you focus, but written grammar exercises also need correct outputs. Check meaning, article, output and accent as four separate steps.
Numbers can adapt to gender and name trap. A table for three people asks τρία άτομα, because άτομα is neuter. Three coffees become τρεις καφέδες. The Dutch three do not predict one solid Greek form.
The same differences are reflected in composite numbers: είκοσι τρεις καφέδες versus είκοσι τρία άτομα. For one, a male order receives a battery: έναν καφέ. At a hundred and above, you must also check the family of the hundred.
At time, the number form refers to ώρα, a female word: στις τρεις and στις τέσσερις. The loose count list with τρία and τέσσερα Could put you on the wrong track there.
The workshop therefore builds orders up to ten with three controlled nouns. The common number maker shows nominative gender forms. That is a consciously smaller, clear model; it does not replace a complete name drop table for all composite numbers.
The name of a word group is not only visible in the article. ο καλόςφίλος his article, adjective and noun masculine nominative singular. If the group becomes an object, you get τον καλόφίλο.
In the plural, the whole group changes again: οι καλοίφίλοι is τους καλούςφίλους As a direct object. Who only οι in τους changes, hasn't applied the whole pattern yet.
In neuter groups, nominating and accusative are the same: το καλόνερό can be subject or object. Equal form does not mean equal function. The verb and the whole sentence indicate the role.
Use a short check in a sentence: what word is the core, what gender and number does it have, what role does the group play, and do all the flexible parts match? This method is more reliable than replacing the Dutch word for word.
Read a menu first in small word groups. Find the main word: the dish or main ingredient. Descriptive words can tell how something is prepared or what property it has. A preposition group like με πατάτες indicates an additional relationship.
Γεμιστέςντομάτες consists of a female adjective and a female plural noun. Both forms belong together. Χωριάτικησαλάτα It's a woman's singular.
A menu often does not have a full verb. That does not make the word groups wrong sentences. The register and the function are different: the card designates dishes. When ordering you place such a group in a real sentence and check the name trap.
Use the scanner as read support only. A name or grammatical dissection does not confirm a complete ingredient list. If you need exact content, ask the restaurant and show you the original map.
An active sentence can tell you who does something: Ο μάγειραςετοιμάζει το φαγητόThe chef is the subject and the food is the direct object. In a passive performance, the food can be the main focus: Το φαγητόετοιμάζεται.
You don't always have to mention in the passive sense who acts. That is useful if the result or process is more important than the performer. If the performer is relevant, an appropriate από-group follow: από τον μάγειρα.
The grammatical subject is not automatically the acting person. Look at the meaning and form. In a passive sense, the subject can undergo the action.
Don't just change a process with a situation. Το φαγητό είναι έτοιμο says the food is ready; Το φαγητόετοιμάζεται A translation with it can have a different meaning than a passive person form.
Please note
A non-active verb form can also have a different meaning than passive; check the word meaning.

Το φαγητό είναι έτοιμο.

A non-active verb form can also have a different meaning than passive; check the word meaning.
Some daily verbs have an inactive form but no passive translation. Έρχομαι means I come and κάθομαι I can mean sitting. Learn such verbs from the beginning with their own personal forms.
With έρχομαι for example, use έρχεσαι For you and ερχόμαστε The place of stress can change. An active series at -ω is not a replacement for this model.
With κάθομαι Of a kind used on motor vehicles κάθεσαι and καθόμαστε. The shape καθίστε is a useful polite or multiple request to sit down. It is not the same as an ordinary announcement that someone sits down.
A model of your own also means that you should not mechanically derive past and aspect from the present. έρχομαι is ήρθα an important past couple. Start with recognizable full sentences and use a table for new people.
Please note
There are standard variants in some individuals; the examples choose one consistent series.

With για να Can you tell me what purpose you're doing something for? Πηγαίνω στην αγορά για να αγοράσωντομάτεςThe second act mentions the purpose of the first. In Dutch you can often use it.
The form after για να makes it visible who does the target action. It does not always have to be the same person as in the first sentence. A clear subject or the verb form prevents confusion.
A specific purchase as a whole can also be carried out in a target sense. να αγοράσω A continuous or repeated activity can get a different perspective. The preposition alone does not determine the correct strain.
Compare a purpose with a reason. A purpose tells what you want to achieve; a reason tells why something happens. Για να Buying doesn't mean the same thing as because something is already the case.
A direct question may be Πού είναι η στάσηYou can answer that question in a larger sense: Δεν ξέρω πού είναι η στάσηYou'll tell me you don't know the location.
A question about yes or no can be answered with αν are embedded: Δεν ξέρω αν είναι ανοιχτάThat means here I don't know if it's open. Αν does not, in every sense, have the conditional translation as.
You don't need a Dutch inversion rule to literally recreate the embedded question. Find the questionword or αν, and then check its own Greek verb form and meaning.
A polite question can frame the whole construction: Ξέρετε πού είναι η στάση; The larger sentence is then a question itself. The function of each part also determines which punctuation marks are appropriate.
Επειδή may initiate a reason: Μένουμε μέσα επειδή βρέχειThe reason is that it's raining. A sense of reason explains the main sentence.
Γι’ αυτό may then introduce a result: Βρέχει. Γι’ αυτό μένουμε μέσαBoth examples have the same logical consistency, but the structure differs. Note what you name as reason and as a result.
Όμως or αλλά may indicate a contradiction: Βρέχει, αλλάθέλουμε να πάμε έξω. The rain does not explain that you want to be outside; the wish is placed opposite.
Connection words are not decorations. First, choose which relationship you mean: addition, reason, consequence or contradiction. Then, your longer sentence becomes more understandable than when you are always και gebruikt.
A time sentence puts actions in a context. Πριν φύγουμε, θα πληρώσουμε indicates that payment takes place before departures. The verb forms make clear who acts and how the speaker looks at the event.
Αφού may mean in an appropriate context: Αφού φάγαμε, φύγαμε. The same connection word may have a reasoning function elsewhere. Therefore, don't read just the single word.
Ενώ may indicate simultaneous: Ενώ τρώγαμε, μιλούσαμε. The two actions run in this example side by side. An imperfect past form fits here with the described background.
For future or unrealized events, a dependent form may appear that is not just a past tense without context. Learn the full models before you freely convert time sentences.
An ordinary denial can affect the whole act: Δεν θέλωκαφέWith contrast, you can highlight a specific alternative: Θέλωνερό, όχι καφέThe speaker may want something, but he doesn't want coffee.
Note the position of όχι In contrast. Όχι τώρα That's other than saying you never want to do the act, so a time word can limit denial.
Also subject contrast is possible: Εγώ θέλωνερό, όχι καφέ. The personal pronoun can be emphasized in this. The intonation and context determine how much emphasis you hear.
Use an explicit context in written exercises. A short Dutch translation can allow several Greek solutions. Therefore, the exercise should indicate whether you want to build a common denial or a contrast between two options.
In conversations you can hear common forms. μιλάω and μιλώ For some plural forms there are variants with or without an extra letter handle. So the chosen table is a learning model, not an exhaustive list.
A polite approach often uses the second person plural. Μπορείτε...; may address one unknown person. Μπορείς... fits into an informal relationship. The situation and relationship remain important.
Παρακαλώ helps make a request friendly, but word choice and tone also participate. Θα ήθελα... is a useful order pattern. A short order is not the best choice in every situation.
Only pre-controlled target forms are accepted for filling exercises. If the context allows two variants, the exercise mentions both. For free texts, the website provides a model and self-control; it does not perform an automatic broad grammar or pronunciation assessment.
Αυτός, αυτή and αυτό adapt to the word. In a word group with a noun, the definite article usually also remains: αυτό το βιβλίο. So you don't choose between pointer and article; they may be needed together. First think of what you point out, then gender, number and name trap.
Your own practice situation: you're at two tables. You start with αυτό το τραπέζιWhen it comes to multiple tables, you build again: αυτά τα τραπέζιαDo not translate word for word from English. Check every form in the entire group.
Now make three separate combinations with the room, salad and card. Then use θέλω Before. In a masculine word, the function as a direct object can give a visible change. In an neuter word, the subject and the object often seem the same. The absence of a visible change does not mean that the grammatical function remains the same.

The form before a noun can change; the amplifier works differently in a property or action. Therefore, you don't learn one Dutch translation much as a separate Greek word. See what goes directly with the form and read the whole group.
Own contrast: πολλήζέστη describes much heat, while πολύ ζεστό a property reinforced: very warm. The single or double λ is not a decoration. Make a card with on one side η ζέστη and on the other side πολλήζέστη, and put a separate ticket for it πολύκαλό naast.
When practicing, the context is decisive. In I drink a lot of water, water has a role in the word group; in I walk a lot says something about the activity. Look not only for the sound. Speak the example sentences, cover them and then rewrite them with the appropriate spelling.

Replacing a choice is a different language act than repeating a choice. Therefore, make your own minor conversations: first you ask for another room, then you say that tomorrow you want the same room. Leave the noun with each new version until the pattern feels familiar.

Your own situation: two suitcases are next to each other. You say first this is my suitcase and then this is mine, not yours. The emphasis changes, but you don't have to build a whole new story. Repeat the same with a key and a book, so that the three sexes become visible.
If the noun in the situation is clear, it can be omitted. That works only because the interlocutors know what you are referring to. Learn the full group first and then carefully shorten it. A good answer to this key is not the same as a general translation of your own in all Dutch expressions.

47. Oneself, self and alone: three different ideas
In Dutch the same word seems in many expressions. For the Greek sentence you first have to decide what it does: directing the act to itself, doing something personal, or is someone without company? Practice those meanings separately.
Ο εαυτός μου is a way to refer to myself; if direct object appears τον εαυτό μου. A shape like μόνος μου can mean alone or on its own strength. μόνος suits the person you speak of: a woman can μόνη μου zeggen.

Dutch and Greek phrases do not always organize the roles the same. μου αρέσει points μου What is loved determines whether you have the singular αρέσει or the plural αρέσουν need. Find the subject first, even if the Dutch translation starts with me.
Your own contrast: put music next to songs. The experiencer remains the same, but the number of what is liked changes. Then make the same exercise with us instead of me. You change another part of the sentence.

Sometimes you connect not one, but two equal parts to a repeated connection word. A parallel form helps the listener recognize the two sides. First determine whether you exclude, offer or add a choice.
Your own practice situation: you discuss transport. You can exclude both possibilities, give them as a choice or say that you use both. The loose words bus and taxi remain the same; especially the logical ratio changes. Therefore, read not only the nouns but the whole construction.
With ούτε exclude two possibilities in your own models. Είτε provides alternatives; και…και can emphasize a double addition. Then try complete sentences instead of just word pairs. A short form as περπατώντας can describe what someone does at the same time as another action. Start with the person: in the simple models below, both actions belong to the same performer. That is a more important first check than immediately translating a long Dutch clause.
Own comparison: Anna walks and talks. You can tell that as two verbs or present walking as an accompanying act. Then change the second person in Nikos. Now the short construction is not just a safe replacement: you have to make it clear that two different people act.

Compare I know you'll come up with whatever you want. The first will show you information, the second will make a free choice possible. Then write your own short conversation with a choice of food, a book or a seat. Name whether you're determining or leaving the content of a choice open.

You can tell that one action is missing or replaced by another. In our own models shows χωρίς να to what does not happen simultaneously or in advance; αντί να put two possible actions against each other. Therefore, read both sides of the sentence.
Compare leaving without saying anything to call instead of sending a message. In the first case you leave something out; in the second you choose an alternative. The same verb may occur in both situations, but the connection makes a different message.
First practice with two complete sentences and then create one. Also, in the second act, name who performs her. A sentence can be grammatical but suggest the wrong person. For your own production, a simple explicit sentence is better than a complicated connection that doesn't express what you mean.

A conversation may require a joint proposal. ας and an appropriate verb form can be formulated as a next step. First learn useful whole sentences as ας δούμε and ας ρωτήσουμεThey offer a way to try something together without a bald warrant.
In your own practice, change the verb first and then the subject of the act. When looking together you think of us; let him speak to him. The grammatical form helps make the intended performer visible. Letting Dutch has multiple meanings and is therefore not an automatic translation rule.
Read a proposal on tone as well. A fixed grammatical construction doesn't make a sentence friendly: context, relationship and intonation remain relevant. Therefore, practice two short roles and let your partner tell you what next action he or she understood.
Please note
Translate not every Dutch automatically with ας.

Πρέπει να may indicate a necessary action, but in another context also support a conclusion. Μπορεί να The grammatical form alone does not tell whether you pronounce a rule, plan or presumption.
Compare in our own situations we have to leave early with him now. The second sentence is an assessment and not an assignment to him. Then perhaps add and investigate how much certainty you want to express. A suspicion does not become a fact by itself because the sentence is grammatically correct.
Use clear directions in a conversation. Say what you know and what you think, and ask a question when you are not sure. The closed exercises only train the difference in meaning of the explicitly given context; they do not assess any real necessity or certainty outside that context.
Please note
Do not treat a presumed conclusion as a controlled fact.

When you tell what someone said, a second perspective is added. The original speaker had his own today, tomorrow and here. When recounting, it must be clear from which moment and place you go. That's no reason to change every time form mechanically.
Own scenario: Maria says she's coming tomorrow on Monday. You tell her on Wednesday. You can explicitly say she was coming Tuesday, or quoting the original conversation. Choose consciously between the event of then and your current information. A Dutch pattern for time shift is not automatically a complete Greek rule.
Therefore, the exercises always show who speaks when. First, in your own story, create a timeline with three points: the saying, the intended event and the retelling. Then check the verbs and time words. This way you avoid a correctly built sentence pointing to the wrong day.
Please note
First, make clear at what point today, tomorrow and here are related.

Besides the unchanging που Relative forms exist as ο οποίος, η οποία and το οποίο. They make gender and number visible and can be called in a preposition group. The choice also has to do with register and clarity; more words do not automatically mean a better sentence.
Earlier comparison: the girlfriend I was talking to. The preposition is part of speaking, while the form of who refers to the girlfriend. In our model that becomes η φίλη με την οποίαμίλησα. The form is not only determined by the first noun: the function within the sequel also counts.
Practice first with, for and over in short sentences. Always find the noun you refer to and then determine the role of the reference in the second sentence. For many everyday situations, a simpler sentence with που Or two short sentences a good alternative.
Please note
Do not just search for the word you refer to; also determine the function in the clause.

62. First conjugation: λύνω in the present and past
The first conjugate includes verbs as λύνω, with the stress before the last syllable in the first person. First learn the six persons of the present tense; the different endings give information about who acts.
Then compare two ways to talk about the past. Έλυνα indicates a continuous or repeated action; έλυσα views an event as a whole. The augment έ- disappears in the chosen plural forms where the stress is different.
The words in one column belong to the same model, but the stress is part of each form. Therefore, not just copy the last letters. Other verbs may require other strains or accent patterns.

63. Future and να: the same person, a different aspect
The future with θα has two sets here: θα λύνω for a development or repetition, θα λύσω for an event as a whole. θα is separate from the verb and is not an ending.
After να Do you recognize the same person forms: να λύνω and να λύσω. The series λύσω depends on an introductory element in this use; treatment λύσω not as an ordinary independent present tense.
A context determines the best form. An action that lasts for a long time can be proposed as a whole; a short action can be repeated correctly. Aspect is not the same as the number of seconds that something takes.

A composite perfectum consists of a form of έχω With a solid form such as λύσει. The fixed form does not get a separate person ending for us or you; the auxiliary verb changes.
For the finished past tense you use είχαλύσει and the other forms of είχα. For the completed future time you combine θα with the perfection.
The tables complete the active λύνω-model with the two future series from the previous chapter. Together you have the usual eight time frame of this model. The Dutch translations help to recognize the construction, but the use areas do not coincide everywhere.

80. Plurals with stem extensions and stress changes
Some words form a longer plural. Ο καφές is οι καφέδες; ο παππούς is οι παππούδες. Do not treat the extra consonants as a universal plural output for every word.
In other families, the number of syllables or the place of stress changes: το όνομα, του ονόματος, τα ονόματα, των ονομάτωνThe shape is not correct if only the letters are correct but the accent is missing.
For a difficult word make a mini-series with article, nominative singular, genius, nominative plural and genius plural. This captures the most important deviation.

In the nominative plural are the chosen forms βαθιοί, βαθιές and βαθιά. The female and neuter singular forms already show why you are not simply -η or -ο can move behind any stem.

In this family, male and female have the same nominative form: διεθνής. The neuter shape is διεθνέςOne word on--ής is not automatically just male.
Compare also the genius διεθνούς and the plurals διεθνείς, διεθνή. The table keeps nominative and genius apart so that you do not confuse an equal form with an equal function.
Many words in this family are also found in more formal texts. A new word makes sure that it is actually part of this model; not every adjective with final stress follows the same sequence.

Πολύς has a short and longer stem in its form family: πολύς and πολύ versus πολλή, πολλοί and πολλές. Therefore, one fixed strain plus one output sequence is not sufficient.
Compare the adjective with the adjective very much. πολύκαλή is πολύ an adverb and doesn't change it with καλή. πολλήζέστη determines πολλή a noun.
In comparison, forms such as: καλύτερος, χειρότερος and μεγαλύτερος important. Learn them by their meaning, along with an example sentence; do not automatically create a form with each property by putting letters behind the basic form.

84. Cardinal numbers, ordinal numbers and quantities
Ένας, τρεις and τέσσερις Many other low key numbers remain the same, but larger numbers may contain re-bending parts, such as διακόσιοι–διακόσιες–διακόσια.
A order number like πρώτος behaves like an adjective: ο πρώτος όροφος and η πρώτη μέρα. The Dutch form first gives you the meaning, but does not predict the Greek ending.
With a composite quantity, you look at each bent part and the noun. First, learn the necessary daily patterns and then expand the number sequence.

An open condition, an imaginary present situation and an unfulfilled situation in the past are different meanings. . . If I had time, I would come . . is not necessarily about yesterday.
For an unrealised possibility in the past is αν είχαχρόνο But often not enough to explain the time difference. A model is αν είχαφύγει νωρίτερα, θα είχαφτάσει στην ώρα μου.
First use a Dutch paraphrase to determine what really happened. Then translate the relationship, not individually each had or would. Mixed conditions may require other time combinations.

In τον Γιάννη τον είδα χθες Giannis is the subject of conversation and the short object appears τον. These two references may belong to the same person in Greek.
In Dutch, you can compare it with "Giannis," which I saw yesterday. That is a useful bridge of meaning, but the exact Greek conditions for doubling depend on the construction, emphasis and determination.
A word placed in front is not automatically the grammatical subject. τον Γιάννη accusative; the me-form είδα tells who sees. Thus, word order, name fall and short forms work together.

Πρέπει in this construction is an impersonal form. In "we must leave" does not change πρέπει but the verb form after να: πρέπει να φύγουμε.
A whole clause can provide the content of an impersonal announcement. Do not try for every Dutch personal form of having to provide another form of πρέπει to be made.
Compare Personal μπορείς να έρθειςYou can come with impersonal. μπορεί να έρθει, maybe he/she comes. The same verb family can get a different sentence structure and meaning.

At a future border as "once I arrive" you often use a perfect dependent form: μόλις φτάσω. This form does not describe a normal present, even if a Dutch future time is lacking.
A habit has a different angle: όταν φτάνω, τηλεφωνώWhen I arrive I call. The speaker describes a recurring pattern.
The conjunction alone does not decide everything. Also determine whether the situation is past, habit, expectation or a separate event. Use a full sentence pair to check the meaning.

89. Relative clauses: recognising two functions at once
In the girlfriend I spoke to, who refers to girlfriend. Within the subtlety belongs to who spoke to. So you have to understand both the reference to the antecedent and the function in the subtlety.
With ο οποίος are gender and number of the antecedent. The name fall follows from the function within the sub-section and any preposition: με την οποία belongs to a female referral after με.
The preceding noun and the relative word do not have to have the same namefall. A nominative in the main sentence can refer to a accusative form in the sub-section.

In δεν είδα κανέναν Forms δεν and κανέναν together a negative meaning. It is not the Dutch sum of two denials that would lift each other.
In a question can κανένας Just mean someone: είδες κανέναν; The grammatical environment determines the reading. Therefore, do not treat a glossary translation anyone as the only meaning.
Compare also a negative fact with a negative order: δεν φεύγει versus μην φύγεις. In the first case, you deny an announcement, in the second you want to avoid an act.

A short possessive word may influence the accent of the preceding word group. το όνομά μου appears on όνομα The word doesn't suddenly have another dictionary stem.
Even if you have an affirmative order with short objects, extra accents may be needed, for example δώσε μού τοLearn such groups along with their pronunciation.
Some short forms are given an accent to clarify a difference in meaning, for example η μητέρα μού είπε, Mother said to me, opposite η μητέρα μουSo Accent rules are sometimes also helping with reading and interpretation.

92. Everyday and formal Greek: recognising variants
A longer form is not automatically more formal or better. In daily Greek you can hear variations like γράφουν and γράφουνε. The choice may be related to register, rhythm and region.
Formal texts also contain overflowing bends and verb forms. Try to recognize such forms before you use them productively. Daily speaking and administrative language do not have the same preferences everywhere.
The purpose of this guide is to use modern Greek. For historical language forms, dialects and specialist legal or literary constructions, you need separate reference. That difference is independent of error or good within one everyday context.
